"Yes the session was extremely helpful. Vardan is clearly a very experienced and knowledgable product manager and technologist. He was clearly committed to helping me with my transition to Product Management. I thought his feedback on my answers to his questions and feedback to my CV were excellent and really helped clarify how I can present my transition into PM to possible employers. He also helped clarify the different responsibilities that different types of PM (Associate PM, Product Owner etc.) have. This very articulate break-down of how these responsibilites differ by size/ stage of company has allowed me to better plan my transition. One question I have is around the extent to which Vardan advised me/ gave me his opinions and the extent to which he allowed me to come to my own views on the issues discussed. I think it could be useful to lay out at the beginning whether a mentoring or a coaching approach is to be taken. I know this is called 'Mentoring Club'! however I have experienced professional coaching which was much more aimed at teasing out my own answers to questions. For example, in terms of the question of how I should transition to PM Vardan laid out two options: transition within my own job or move to a new company. He gave his view on which of these would be a better option for me, which I actually appreciated but it might have been better to establish at the start of the conversation if I wanted a more guided mentorship approach or a more probing coaching approach. I imagine some candidates/ professionals may prefer one or the other depending on their circumstances/ the issues they wish to discuss. In terms of the CV feedback I think the way feedback was delivered was definitely the best way, but I think there is more room for establishing the approach to more open-ended questions (like how to transition to a new role) at the start of the conversation. Overall this was a massively helpful session and I hugely appreciate Vardan spending this time with me and sharing his rich experience and insights."
